ClickFunnels is very good at what it does. It’s also $97 a month before you’ve sold a thing — and for most people reading this, that’s the whole story.
So let me save you some time. This is an honest review of ClickFunnels: what it’s genuinely brilliant at, who should actually pay for it, and the free tool I’d point nine out of ten people to instead.
What ClickFunnels actually is
ClickFunnels builds sales funnels — the step-by-step pages that take a stranger from “never heard of you” to “just bought your thing.” Landing page, order form, upsell, thank-you page, the lot, stitched together without you touching code.
It more or less invented this category, and it shows. The funnel builder is mature, the templates are proven, and there’s a vast community of people sharing what works. If you want to build a complex, multi-step funnel with conditional logic and split paths, ClickFunnels does it as well as anything on the market.
Credit where it’s due: it’s a serious tool, built by people who understand selling.
The price, which is the bit that matters
There’s no free plan. The entry tier is $97 a month (their “Launch” plan), the middle is $197, and the top is $297. There’s a 14-day trial, but it wants your card up front.
That $97 a month is $1,164 a year. For a beginner who hasn’t sold anything yet, that’s not an investment — it’s a standing order to a tool you’re still learning to use. The maths only works once you’re already making money. Which is a slightly awkward thing for a tool that markets itself to people who want to start making money.
Who ClickFunnels is genuinely right for
I’m not here to trash it. ClickFunnels earns its keep for a specific person: someone already running paid traffic to offers that convert, who needs advanced funnels and has the revenue to justify the cost. If a funnel is making you thousands a month, $97 is a rounding error and the superior templates and frameworks are worth every penny.
If that’s you, take the ClickFunnels trial and crack on. You’ll get on fine.
For everyone else — beginners, bloggers, anyone testing an idea before betting the rent on it — there’s a better starting point.
The free alternative that does most of it: Systeme.io
I use and recommend Systeme.io, and the headline is simple: it does about 90% of what ClickFunnels does, and it has a free plan that’s actually worth using.
Not a crippled, sign-up-to-be-nagged free plan. A real one. On the free tier you get up to three sales funnels, unlimited emails, a custom website, online courses, and — this is the part that surprises people — a built-in affiliate programme. ClickFunnels charges $297 a month for affiliate management. Systeme.io includes it at £0.
The funnel builder isn’t quite as slick, and the template library isn’t as deep. I won’t pretend otherwise. But for actually building a landing page, capturing emails, and selling something, it covers what the overwhelming majority of people need. And because email marketing is built in on every plan, you’re not paying for a second tool on the side.
When you do outgrow the free plan, the paid tiers start around $27 a month — roughly a quarter of ClickFunnels’ entry price, with unlimited funnels.
ClickFunnels vs Systeme.io, the honest version
ClickFunnels wins on: template quality, advanced funnel logic, community and training, and sheer polish. It’s the Rolls-Royce. If money’s no object and funnels are your business, it’s superb.
Systeme.io wins on: price (free vs $97), all-in-one simplicity, built-in email and affiliate tools, and the fact that you can start today without entering a card.
So which should you pick?
If you’re already making good money from funnels and need the most powerful builder going, ClickFunnels is a defensible choice.
If you’re starting out, testing an idea, or simply don’t fancy paying $1,164 a year to find out whether this works — start with Systeme.io’s free plan. Build your first funnel, capture your first emails, make your first sale. You can always upgrade later, and most people never need to.
Try Systeme.io free — no card required
ClickFunnels is the better tool. Systeme.io is the better decision for almost everyone who’s asking whether they can afford ClickFunnels — because if you have to ask, the answer is: not yet, and you don’t need to.
